Why Patients Choose Implants Over Dentures

Dentures can help short-term. A fixed implant, including cheekbone or back-of-jaw implants when upper-jaw bone is gone, is the upgrade most patients wish they'd found sooner.

Traditional dentures Traditional Dentures

The short-term fix

  • ✕Slip or shift while eating and speaking
  • ✕Need frequent adjustments and replacements
  • ✕Don't stop the bone loss in your jaw
  • ✕Can cause sore spots and irritation
Fixed Dental Implants

The permanent upgrade

  • ✓Stay fixed in place so you can eat and speak with confidence
  • ✓Look and feel like natural teeth
  • ✓Help protect against further bone loss
  • ✓Cheekbone or back-of-jaw implants when the upper jaw is too thin

WHEN UPPER-JAW BONE ISN'T ENOUGH

Told You Don't Have Enough Bone?

Cheekbone and back-of-jaw implants are why patients turned away somewhere else can still get a fixed smile.

Conventional implants need enough bone in the jaw. When the upper jaw is too thin, many offices recommend months of grafting or say you are not a candidate. Dr. Gendler can place zygomatic implants in the cheekbone, a dense bone that stays strong after teeth are lost, and pterygoid implants toward the back of the upper jaw. In many cases that means a full arch of new teeth without a major bone graft.

  • ✓For people told they cannot have implants because of bone loss in the upper jaw
  • ✓Zygomatic implants: anchored in the cheekbone instead of a thin upper jaw
  • ✓Pterygoid implants: longer implants at the back of the upper jaw when bone there is gone
  • ✓Often no major bone graft, and fewer surgeries than a graft-first plan
  • ✓Planned on a 3D CT scan so placement is mapped before surgery
  • ✓A temporary fixed bridge the same day in many cases, including after failed implants

Dr. Gendler has been placing zygomatic implants for years and completed hands-on advanced training in five to six countries. If another dentist said you don't qualify, this is the consult to book.

WHEN YOU MOVE FORWARD

What's Included With Implant Treatment

The free visit is how we plan. If you move ahead, implant treatment includes more than the implants themselves.

These come with implant treatment, not the complimentary consultation.

  • ✓Tooth extractions when they are part of your plan
  • ✓Minor bone grafting when it helps support the implants
  • ✓A year of professional maintenance in our office
  • ✓A water flosser to care for your new teeth at home
  • ✓A night guard to protect your new smile
  • ✓An extended warranty on your implant work

Want to sleep through surgery? We arrange IV sedation with a separate anesthesia team, and you pay them directly. Nitrous or oral sedation can be done in our office.

WHO DOES DENTAL IMPLANTS
Dr. Joseph Gendler

Dr. Joseph Gendler

General dentist

Dentists and dental surgeons can replace a missing tooth with an implant. No one specialty focuses on dental implants, so it is worth looking for advanced training and credentialing.

Two organizations identify that deeper focus, experience, and training: the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI). When a dentist is recognized by them, it shows a higher focus, skill, and ability in dental implants.

Dr. Joseph Gendler is a general dentist, an AAID Associate Fellow, an AAID Fellow, and an ABOI Diplomate. He is one of the few with all three, and the only one in the Twin Cities.

I put this off for years. I kept telling myself it was too expensive or too complicated. Getting it done was the best decision I ever made. My mouth feels completely different and I finally eat without thinking twice.

Once I healed I could eat everything. Apples, corn on the cob, nuts. My confidence came back in a big way. I would recommend going the fixed route to absolutely anyone. It changed everything for me.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Most Patients Had the Same Questions You Do

If something has been holding you back, you will probably find the answer right here.

How quickly can I get back to my normal routine?
Most patients are back to their day within a couple of days. You'll start with softer foods right away, and as healing progresses you'll work your way back to eating whatever you want. Most people are surprised by how manageable the whole thing is.
Is the procedure going to hurt?
Most patients say they were far more nervous than they needed to be. We use local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. Nitrous (laughing gas) or oral sedation can be done in our office. If you want to sleep through the procedure, we work with a dedicated anesthesia team, and you pay that team directly so it stays separate from your implant treatment. The most common feedback we get? "That was nothing."
What are the implants actually made from?
We work with two main materials: Acrylic and Zirconia. For most patients, we recommend Zirconia. It is stronger, more durable, and looks more like a real tooth. We will walk you through both options at your free consultation so you can choose with confidence.
Will I be awake for it?
That is up to you. Many patients do well with local anesthetic only. Nitrous or a pill can help you relax in our office. If you prefer to be fully asleep, a separate anesthesia team can provide IV sedation, billed by them. We will talk through what fits you at your free consultation.
How precise is the fit going to be?
Your teeth are digitally mapped before anything is placed. That means the fit is precise, the bite feels natural, and nothing is left to guesswork. You will not walk out with a generic solution that was not made for your mouth.
How long do dental implants last?
With regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, dental implants are built to last a lifetime. They are not a temporary fix or something you will need to replace every few years. They are a permanent upgrade to your smile.
Will they actually look like real teeth?
Yes. That is the entire point. We use advanced materials and digital fitting to make sure your new teeth look like they have always been there. Most people will not know the difference unless you tell them.
What if my teeth or gums are already in rough shape?
That is exactly who we help. Failing teeth, gum disease, a denture that never fit, or bone loss so advanced that another office said you don't qualify. Dr. Gendler places conventional implants where bone is dense. When the upper jaw is too thin, zygomatic implants go in the cheekbone and pterygoid implants go toward the back of the upper jaw. Your free consultation is where we assess what you are working with and build a plan around it.
I've been told I don't have enough bone. Can I still get implants?
Yes, if the shortage is in the upper jaw. Zygomatic implants are anchored in the cheekbone. Pterygoid implants are longer implants placed toward the back of the upper jaw. Both can support a fixed bridge when there is not enough upper-jaw bone for a conventional implant. Lower-jaw bone loss is planned differently, often with grafting or conventional implants. A 3D CT scan at your consult shows which path fits. In many cases you do not need a major graft first. If another dentist said you are not a candidate, get a second look here.
What's included besides the implants themselves?
Implant treatment includes tooth extractions when they are part of your plan, minor bone grafting when it helps support the implants, a year of professional maintenance in our office, a water flosser, a night guard, and an extended warranty. IV sedation is optional and billed by a separate anesthesia team. The complimentary consultation is the exam, 3D CT, X-rays, and treatment plan so we can map all of this before you commit.
How do I take care of them once they are in?
The same way you would care for natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss, and come in for regular checkups. That is it. No adhesives, no nightly removal, no special soaking routine. They are part of your mouth now.
